1. What is Ledger Live?

Overview

Ledger Live is Ledger’s official desktop & mobile app that lets you manage crypto assets, monitor portfolio performance, send/receive tokens, swap, stake and connect to DeFi—all while your private keys remain on your Ledger hardware device.

2. Prepare before you start

Checklist

  • Purchase Ledger hardware from an official source.
  • Have a secure, private place to write your 24-word recovery phrase.
  • Use the official Ledger website to download Ledger Live (avoid third-party downloads).

Security tip

Never share your recovery phrase. Ledger or Ledger Live will never ask for it. If any app or page asks for your seed phrase, it’s a scam.

3. Step-by-step: Install & initial setup

Download & verify

Visit the official Ledger Live download page and choose your platform (Windows / macOS / Linux / Mobile). Run the installer and open the app.

Set up your hardware

  1. Open Ledger Live and choose “Get Started”.
  2. Select your device model (Nano S / Nano X / Stax / Flex etc.) and follow on-screen steps.
  3. On the device: create a PIN and write down the 24-word recovery phrase on the supplied card—store it offline.

Restore vs. New device

If you already have a recovery phrase, choose “Restore device” during setup and enter the phrase when prompted (on the hardware device only).

4. Add accounts & manage crypto

Adding accounts

In Ledger Live: go to Accounts → Add account → select the coin (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). Connect your Ledger device when prompted and follow the steps to add an account.

Send & Receive

  • To receive: click Receive, choose the account, verify address on your Ledger device, then share the verified address.
  • To send: click Send, enter address and amount, then confirm the transaction on your device.

5. Extra features & recovery

App catalog & integrations

Install blockchain apps on your Ledger device via Ledger Live (each coin needs its app). Use Ledger Live to connect to third-party services (DEX, staking providers) with device-confirmed signing.

Recovery options

Ledger Recover is an optional encrypted backup & restore service offered by Ledger. If you choose it, follow official Ledger instructions to enable and use it responsibly.

6. Safety & troubleshooting

Protect your seed phrase

Write your recovery phrase neatly on the recovery card (or a dedicated metal backup) and store it in a secure, offline place. Never enter it on a website or share it.

Beware of fake apps

Only download Ledger Live from ledger.com or official app stores. If an interface or popup asks for your recovery phrase, treat it as malicious—disconnect and verify you downloaded the official app.

Troubleshooting tips

  • Update Ledger Live to the latest version when prompted.
  • If a device fails to initialize, use official Support guides or contact Ledger Support only via ledger.com/support.
